WORLD CYCLING DAY: Rivers FRSC seeks design of bicycle route in Urban renewal roads

In commemoration of the 3rd United Nations World Cycling Day, them: "Cycling For A Healthy Lifestyle." that RS6.1 Rivers Sector Command held the event low key considering the current situations here in the South South. 

To create awareness and to sensitise the general public of the significance of the day, a joint press briefing was organised by the Sector Command in addition to briefly riding on the bicycles within a comfort zone area. 

The Sector Commander, CC Salisu Umar Galadunci, while addressing the press informed the public that the United Nations General Assembly on its 72nd sitting of 16th April 2018 took a decision to set aside first week of June each year globally to celebrate and create awareness  of the advantages of non motorised means of transportation by riding bicycle as means of transport. If embrace, he said the advantages outweigh the disadvantages such that it will serve as means of exercise thereby reducing some health situations people are faced with for lack of exercise. It can also help improve people's mental ability  psychologically. He added that another advantage is to help reduce gas emission which is a great danger to climate change, it can also help reduce too much traffic gridlock withing the urban areas. 

The Sector Commander in addition mentioned that he is going to talk with Ministry of Works through its Commissioner to draw their attention on the need to consider a design for bicycle route in the new Rivers Urban renewable roads construction going on to allow space for those willing to ride bicycles going places 

Earlier when the addressing the press, Mr Giondemenico Massari, the Caretaker Trustee Cycling Federation of Nigeria highlighted the role of the FRSC in partnering with the Federation to ensuring awareness a larger part of Nigerians. He said his Federation has worked and is working hard to groom young Nigerians into becoming not only hobby riders but professionals. The Federation has already recorded tremendous achievements by bringing medals back home from regional and global competitions in all categories of competitors where Nigeria in one of the category is ranked second in the whole world. 

In attendance during the event were the Rivers State Coach and Member of Cycling Federation Mr Emmanuel Onasanya, some few members of the elite team of Nigeria that has represented the country Internationally.
