The Lagos State Government on Wednesday arraigned a commercial bus driver, Elijah Shokoya who allegedly killed an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Olawale Akinmade before an Ikeja High Court.

The defendant is facing a one-count charge of involuntary manslaughter before Justice Oyindamola Ocala.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution led by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence at 7.20pm on January 26 along Ikorodu Expressway by Demurin Junction, Ketu, Lagos.

Adeyemi told the court that the defendant, Shokoya, mowed down Akinmade, the LASTMA official with his Opel Car with registration number AAA 74 GG.

She said the offence violates Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 and is punishable under Section 229 of the same law.

Following the arraignment of the defendant, Adeyemi asked for a trial date.

She also requested that the defendant be further remanded at the correctional facility.

The defence counsel, Mrs Abiodun Kolawale from the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) also requested for a short adjournment date to present Shokoya’s bail application before the court.

Justice Ogala granted their request and ordered that Shokoya be remanded at the Correctional Center and adjourned the case until July 14 for trial.
