...to be deported after completion of jail terms

Forty-four Nigerians have been deported for various offences including illegally staying in Ghana, several Ghanaian media reports have said.

The deportees, 43 males and 1 female were sentenced to 99 days in prison and will be deported having served their sentences at the Tamale prisons in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Immigration officers will lead the deportees from Tamale to Accra to receive their deportation letters and be escorted out of the country, the reports say.

Arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth exercise stressing that the various regional capitals the deportees will pass through have been alerted to ensure smooth passage, according to the Ghanaian reports.

This the first time the Immigration Service is deporting a large group of people from the area—prompted by the sighting of “a lot of illegal entries” there.

“Following reports that some bandits are in the Tamale area seeking to terrorise the residents, the Service continues to secure the country’s borders,” one outlet stated.

The Ghana Immigration Service also held a durbar to educate foreigners on entry and residing illegally.
