By ADELEKE ADESANYA --- A 45-year-old man, Ayo Ahigbede, has been handed over to police by the residents of Orere Abosan Estate, Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State for allegedly luring a 14 years old down syndrome girl into his room and defiling her.

Ayo, who had earlier absconded after committing the alleged atrocity in broad daylight, was later apprehended by the resident when he sneaked into the house late in the night.

A resident of the estate, Femi Ajele, who related the incident to our correspondent, said the suspect was in the estate to visit his elder sister. He added that the suspect lured the 14-year-old down syndrome girl into the sister’s apartment and forcefully had a carnal knowledge of her.

He said the parents of the minor were searching for her before she came out of the suspects apartment with her cloth stained with blood.

“He lured the down syndrome girl into his apartment where he came to visit his elder sister and slept with her by force.

“He claimed the little girl came to him to beg for food, he said he didn’t force the girl but people can attest to the fact that the girl can’t beg for food because his parents are well to do and always take good care of their children and provide them with whatever they need.”

Noting that the suspect had been monitoring the girl for days before taking advantage of her, Ajele said, “The girl was suddenly found missing in the compound so her sisters and mother started shouting her name knowing fully well that she should still be within the vicinity. Later, the little girl of 14 came out on the balcony of the next house waving to her sisters with bloodstain. The man that harboured her in his apartment pushed her out and locked the door.”

A right activist, Toyin Okanlawon, who also spoke about the incident, said the suspect upon his arrest, vowed to deal with the residents that handed him over to the police operatives.

According to him, “When neighbors knocked on his door, he refused to open and escaped through the kitchen exit door, then jumped into the next house and broke their roof. He advanced to the 3rd house as well and made an escape.

“He ran away since morning only to sneak in in the night but was seen by a neighbour who alerted other neighbours and he was apprehended.”

He said the suspect was later handed over to the police team that came from Igbogbo division.

Meanwhile, the survivor, while speaking, said the perpetrator asked her to lie in bed, pulled off her pants and then defiled her.

The Lagos Police Public Relation Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
